On the other end….

vintage school desk as end table

A couple of weeks ago, I showed you the vintage piece I used for the other end of the sofa.  To see that post, click here.  This end has a little more room if the right side of the French door is kept closed, which is usually is.

I recently purchased this vintage school desk and had plans on putting it in the booth to sell.  After seeing it here, I think I may keep it awhile!

I plan on keeping an eye out for more croquet ball to display on top.

The seat is a perfect place for stacking magazines and books.  The sunroom is slowly coming together and is definitely my most favorite room of the house!

End Table for a Small Space

vintage barrel as an end table

What to do when you have small space but must have an end table to set a beverage on?  Improvise!

vintage barrel as an end table

I remembered this wooden barrel in my booth.  It’s the perfect size and adds a little rustic to the room.  Now what to do on the other end?

DIY Jug Lamp

SAM_6061

Remember when I shopped the dairy barn and found all those old jars?  Every since I got them, I’ve had visions of lamps in my head!

SAM_5465

I got plenty of the brown jugs but there were two taller bottles like in the picture above.  I did have some serious cleaning to do on these bottles!  They been setting in the barn for many, many years!

SAM_6313

This is the piano in the living room.  I used one of the jugs with some faux leaves and on the other end is the lamp Hunter made from one of the jugs.

SAM_6315

I purchased a white drum shade from Wal-Mart.  I was going to cover it but I really like the white contrast with the dark brown of the lamp.  Basically, Hunter used a wine cork as a stopper and used it to hold the lamp hardware.  It was very similar to how he fixed the jar lamp.  We did not drill a hole, the wire extends from the top.

The needlepoint picture in the middle is a recent find at Goodwill.  They have had it for quite awhile and now that Fall is upon us, I thought it would make a nice touch with its band of  vivid Autumn leaves.

SAM_6318

I’m sorry that my pictures are not better.  This corner of my living room is so hard to get a good picture of!

Home Office & Craft Storage

SAM_6056

Do you have a room that when you walk by it, you stop in the doorway just to look at it?  Our home office is that room for me!  I am just so pleased with how it turned out! It just seemed to fall into place!

SAM_5757

It’s not a very big room, measuring 10X14, but now it has plenty of storage!  This room is right off the living room though a set of French doors. The above picture is to the left of the door.  This is the organization wall inspired by Pottery Barn with the rustic wall organizer, dry erase board and topped off with the vintage printer’s tray. I moved the little Lane chest from the back porch into here.  Right now it holds wooden furniture legs! The little case on top was my mother-in-laws dance case when she was younger.

SAM_6031

Here are the built in’s that we salvaged from a remodel job.   I moved the suitcases to the top, along with the vintage copper pot, a pickle jar, and some green mason jars. The metal locker bins provide a lot of storage as well.  The baskets that I purchased at a yard sale are the perfect size for scrapbook paper.

SAM_6055

I used green mason jars to hold rubber bands and paper clips.  I looked everywhere this summer for my green mason jars to use for the 4th of July and couldn’t find them.  I found three at a yard sale and then last week, Savannah was pulling out some Fall dishes for me that were in a lower deep cabinet and there they were!

SAM_6052

I have changed this out since I shared it with you before. I took an old frame, strung some wire from side to side and used clothes pins to hold some family photos.  I added the leaves for a little Fall décor.

SAM_6023

And here’s the desk my husband made for me!!  He used bc sanded plywood for the top and an old porch post cut in half for the legs.  The back part of the desk is attached to the well using a small ledge.

SAM_6025

Remember when I found the vintage printer’s tray in the trash?  This ladder was also in there!  I leaned it in the corner and attached the pail and pumpkin wreath with some jute string.  The pail holds foam paintbrushes.  The little wooden box I found in the barn holds odds and ends.

SAM_6056

This wooden thing a magig was in a box deal that Hunter purchased at the auction.  We had set it aside for the burn pile but I walked by it the next day and thought that would be perfect for the desk!  I washed it up good but didn’t do anything else to it!  It’s the perfect size for envelopes, receipts, notebooks, etc.  The seagrass lamp has been moved from the foyer to the office.  This is where I was planning on putting it when I made it.  It just got made before the desk!!

SAM_6020

On the opposite end of the room from the built-in’s is the balustrade table all decorated for Halloween.  Since I moved the suitcases to the top of the cabinets, I moved two locker baskets to the top of the footlocker.  On the opposite end, I put two large baskets.  One holds fabric and the other faux fruit and flowers.

SAM_6041

After seeing the previous pictures of this room, I did move the large picture down a little.

SAM_6040

At the end of the table, I hung this embroidered scripture. A family friend gave this to me.  Someone gave him an entire camp full of furniture and this was in there.  It’s very old and there are some worn spots on it but I love it and wanted to display it somewhere!

SAM_6058

I purchased this capiz light fixture for Savannah’s room last year but she’s already changed her room up and it doesn’t go with her current theme, camouflage!!  She went from one extreme to the other!  Anyway, I loved the fixture and was determined that it was going somewhere in the house.  I know the capiz may not exactly go with the vintage theme of the office but I don’t care!!  When I’m sitting in the living room, I have a perfect view of it though the transom window/French doors.

Vintage Wheelbarrow

SAM_5859
Look what I found just in time for Fall!!  A vintage wooden wheelbarrow!  Two weeks ago, Hunter and I went to a yard sale that was raising money for an animal shelter.  It was held at my hairdresser’s shop and I had always admired this wheelbarrow.  I saw that is was sitting in the yard with the other items for sale but I assumed it was being used to display item.  Before I finished shopping, I thought well I’ll just check and see.  And it was for sale!!  My hairdresser had donated it!  I immediately said I want it!!!
SAM_5860
I’m not going to say how much I paid for it but I got a super great deal!  My hairdresser said she didn’t want to know how much they sold it for because she originally paid over $300 for it.  So, just in case she reads this post, I’ll leave out the exact price!
SAM_5864
Some of the wood is getting brittle so I will be keeping it on the porch, out of the weather.  Once it does need some work, my husband is very good at restoring old items like this.  In the past, he has restored an old horse drawn wagon, a double swing glider, and entry gates to a plantation home.
SAM_5866
I haven’t decorated outside for Fall yet since we’ve been so busy having a yard sale but I wanted to dress it up a little!  I used some faux flowers and fruit.
SAM_5869
In the upper left hand corner of this picture you can see Hunter’s latest project, a 1967 Ford Mustang!  My Dad traded it for some mechanic work and he and Hunter are going to restore it!

Organization Wall for Home Office

SAM_5757
I finished my organization wall in the home office/craft area!  I am sooo pleased with how it came out!  Especially after all the stress of creating the rustic wall organizer.
SAM_5762
There’s a pocket full of Confederate money…..no, it’s not real!  I wish!
SAM_5760
Since I first showed you the DIY dry erase board, I have changed out the fabric to more of a linen like material.  My writing shows up better against this color plus it adds a little contrast by using a different material than the wall organizer.
SAM_5741
To fill in this little space, I used an key and lock….both reproductions!
SAM_5761
This post is brought to you by the letter “S”.  I think you probably know by now where a lot of the inspiration for this wall came from.  Pottery Barn.
Of course, it’s not exactly as theirs but I changed it up to suit my own needs.  I did pick up a metal letter holder thingie at a yard sale but there just wasn’t enough room on my wall.
SAM_5759
Pottery Barn plus others sell these great pocket watch clocks!  I was going to try to make one but when I came across this one at Hobby Lobby for only $12.50 (it was 50% off), I just couldn’t pass it up!
SAM_5746
Up top is my printer tray!  I have added a few more things since I first shared it with you.
SAM_5753
My favorite is the vintage fire extinguisher!  Of course, it’s on loan from Hunter!  It’s quite heavy and made of brass.  I had to secure it with some putty so if wouldn’t fall off and conk me in the head!
SAM_5761
The brick on top of the wall organizer is from the early 1800’s.  It’s amazing to think it’s over 200 years old!
SAM_5757
I’m getting close to being finished with this room!  You know how something just clicks into place?  Well, this room did that for me!  Once we received the cabinets and then later the locker bins, everything else just sort of fell into place!

Printer Trays

SAM_5628

Recently I have went to the local antique store twice looking at a printer tray.  I really wanted one for my office but I’m cheap and was trying to figure out the most expensive option!  The first time I went, Hunter was with me.  He told me that my fil had one stored in his attic but then he went out of town!  How dare he go on vacation in my time of need?  Just kidding!  The second time I went my husband was with me and said, “Don’t buy that I can make it!”  Well, I already knew he could make it but WOULD he make it?  Anyway, I left the store and starting thinking of other options because I really didn’t expect my husband to make it anytime soon.

On Wednesday, for the first time ever, I purposely left my home to go check the trash!  As in other people’s trash!  In the past, if I saw something in the trash I wanted I have stopped and picked it up, especially if I have a kid in the car that I can make get out and grab it quick!  Hunter and I went to an upscale neighborhood that my husband works in a lot.  That’s how we know their trash cycle!  And can you believe that I found an old printer’s tray just laying on top of the garbage can?  I was so thrilled you would have thought that I had won the lottery!

SAM_5637

I immediately came home and cleaned it up, attached some hanger bracket thingies on the back and hung it on the wall!  While wiping it down some of the varnish starting flaking away but that’s alright, it just gives it more character!  I started adding some little odds and ends to the cubby holes.  In addition to vintage items, I wanted to add things that actually meant something to my family.  On this side, there’s a picture of my parents and me when I was a baby.  Since we live in Louisiana, I had to put a crawfish and some shells on display!  The matches were from a MRE that was given out after Hurricane Katrina.  The shot gun shells are for the hunters in the family, my husband and daughter!

SAM_5636

I can’t forget Mardi Gras!  Hunter loaned me a few of his things…a compass, electrical socket for the 1920’s and a Barq’s root beer emblem for a pencil.

SAM_5638

The skeleton key is not old but it reminds me of our home!  All of our interior doors have this type of lock.  There’s a Dixie beer bottle opener, a broken locker pin and another shotgun shell.
Three days later, Hunter and I were out looking for thrifty deals and made a quick stop at a yard sale on the way home.  I found another printer’s tray!

SAM_5624

Guess how much I paid for it?  NOTHING!  The back was a little damaged and the lady said “Oh you can have it!”  Can you believe it? Not one, but two, printer trays in one week and both were free!!!  This one is not as old as the first and it’s a little deeper.  I think I’ve got Hunter talked into letting me put it in his room.  I’ve already found a few of his little things that will fit in it!  A government issued first aide kit, an old jar of Vaseline and an old box of wallpaper remover stuff.

I found another oldie but goodie in the trash at the same house but I’ll show you that later!  Check back in the next couple of days to see my memo wall that I’ve been working on.

Thanks for stopping by!

Vintage Pickle Jars

SAM_4656

Vintage pickle jars make good beverage dispensers.  Whenever we have a get together and serve canned drinks or individual bottled water, there is a lot wasted.  So this time, I decided to use Hunter’s vintage pickle jar for a water dispenser at our recent barbeque.  He found it in the old family barn and based on the age of the jar, it was was probably his great great grandfather’s.  I used a ladle as the dipper and one of my PB inspired dispenser tags.

SAM_4736

My mom said that the jar reminded her of the root beer barrel candy that was sold individually when she was a little girl.  I goggled it but found nothing to indicate that they were used for that but you never know.  I did find a great site that gave many details about glass markings.  You can visit it here. This jar is marked Duraglas with a bail wire and wooden handle. Based on the other markings of the jar and this site, this jar was made by the Owens Illinois Glass Company.  It was made using mold cavity #9 and made in plant #7, which is in Alton, Illinois, in 1955.  This makes the jar 57 years old!

SAM_4643

Awhile back, I tried a new pickle jar but the opening was not big enough for the ladle but I happy to say this one was!

Vintage China Cabinet

Today I'm sharing some thrifty finds that I've collected over the years that are stored in my vintage china cabinet.  The cabinet came from the local antique store.  I've had it for many years.  At one time it was used in my living room as a curio cabinet.  Below is a picture of it at Easter.

Let's start at the top.  The gold wood frame was a garbage find!  That's right!  We were going down the road and it was propped up beside a trash can.  I brought it home, cleaned it up and it has been above the china cabinet every since.

The silver plated candlesticks were a gift from my parents a couple of years ago.  They were purchased from ebay.  The champagne bucket, the little relish bowl and the candle snuffer were all garage sale finds.

My silver really needs a cleaning, so overlook that part!  The detail on the mirror is so pretty.  I don't understand why someone would throw it away!

The candle snuffer has a bee with its hive on the end.  I think its made of brass.  I think I paid 25 cents for it.

The little relish bowl has a brass knob on top with a silver spoon.

This is my set of Noritake Richmond.  I watched ebay for months, or it seemed like it, for a good deal on a basic white or cream china with gold trim.  I purchased the entire set of 8 complete place settings (with a few odds and ends), 2 platters, round serving bowl, oval serving bowl, round serving bowl with lid, gravy boat, coffee pot and sugar and creamer for less than $50!  And that included shipping!  Needless to say, I was very, very pleased with this purchase.

A peek at one of the sides show some more Noritake and Mikasa "The Ritz" wine glasses.  I purchased those at a garage sale at a local storage unit.  I paid 25 cents a piece for them!!

The silver plated coffee serving set was given to my mom by her older sister approximately 45-48 years ago.  My aunt purchased the set with stamps.  My mom passed it along to me a couple of years ago.  Thanks, Mom!  Salad plates to the right are from the Salvation Army.  The gold rimmed glasses to the left were a gift from my son and nephew.  They found them while messing around in an old car at my dad's mechanic.  I think they were about 12 years old at the time.

Under the platter is a silverware chest.  It contains gold flatware that will serve 12.  You can see a teaspoon on the platter.  I picked up this set at a yard sale for $10.  The lady received it as a wedding gift and had never used it.

And there you have it!  My vintage cabinet full of thrifty finds, well at least 95 percent are.

Thanks for stopping by.  I've love for you to follow me.  If you leave me a message, I'll follow you back!
