A Plaid Winter Table

I think we’re about to float away down here in Louisiana!  It seems like it has been raining for weeks!  I wanted some branches for a centerpiece but it was just to wet to get outside!

I draped the table in this beautiful wool throw that I found at Goodwill.  I love the blue and green plaid.  The label on it says it was made in Scotland. I haven’t got to use it a lot because it makes you warm and toasty quick and down here in Louisiana, it just doesn’t get that cold.

I was also happy to be able to use my new napkins from Pottery Barn!  They were marked down last week to $11 for a pack of 4!  I picked up some additional things but wished I could have gotten more!

I really stacked the dishes this week!  Starting with rattan chargers (Wal-Mart), white ironstone chargers (Homer Laughlin), green leaf majolica plates, blue speckled salad plates (Mikasa Ultra stone Blue) and white ironstone bowls (Buffalo China).  The chargers brought a different texture to the table while the white dishes lightened it up!

The little covered dishes are from Hobby Lobby. They were actually part of their Christmas décor and I got them for a $1.10 each….I wish they would have had more!

The weather is cooler here and it now feels like Fall…finally!  Let’s hope it stays that way!

 

 

On today’s table, the woodland creatures are out!  I used 2 pieces of burlap as runners on the table.  The water glass shown here is a vintage wheat glass along side the green Dollar Tree wine glass.

 

 

In the center is a Fall garland from Hobby Lobby with leaves and feathers that I inserted some additional pieces of berries and flowers.  The brass wood like candle stick fits right in.

 

 

I started the place setting with a rattan charger to add in another natural element.  The bottom green place is from Wal-Mart, it picks up the green trim on the salad plate.  The center plate is a vintage set that I found at an estate sale over the summer.  They are marked J Broadhurst ironstone…Staffordshire, England.  The ironstone is topped with pheasant salad plates that I found at a yard sale.  They are marked Bareuther Waldsassen  Bavaria-Germany.  The napkins were purchased from Dirt Cheap for 50 cents each but were originally from Target.  I love how the blue in the napkins pick up the blue in the birds.

 

 

Here is a better look at the ironstone plate.  It is part of The Constable Series  Bicentennial 1776-1976.

 

 

The flatware is Rogers 1847 silverware in the First Love Pattern.

 

 

 

The green sherbet glasses are from Goodwill.  They are Kings Crown made by Indiana Glass in the 1960’s.

A Rose Red Halloween

 

Welcome….we’ve been expecting you!  (I borrowed that line from Stephen King’s Rose Red movie!)  Our hostess today is sure to rattle your bones!

Black roses from her garden adorn the napkins!  I wonder what she’ll serve in those Royal Red (by Anchorware) dessert dishes?

 

 

Wicked!  Her salad servers are skeleton hands!  She doesn’t let anything go the waste!

There’s a Change in the Air

 

There’s a change in the air, says I!  Well, a slight change.  Instead of 95, it’s only 89 degrees!

I didn’t want to go full blown Fall so there’s just a hint of it here!

I used my Pottery Barn Inspired candle holders along with some pears and pinecones!

I love the way the color of the pear pulls the warm yellow gold tones from the runner.

The finish of the candle sticks adds a little more rustic flair to the table!

The table setting started with a rattan charger (Wal-Mart), cream dinner plate (BHG) and green salad plate (JCP).

Very light tan napkins (Target via Dirt Cheap) pull more of the cream from the runner while the dark wood napkin ring coordinates with the finish of the table.  The flatware is Reed & Barton via Goodwill and the steak knife is Laguiole from Marshalls.  I picked them up for a steal!  They are the absolute best steak knives that I have ever used!  They were definitely be worth paying full price!

I’m sure everyone recognizes the green wine goblets from the Dollar Tree!

I just purchased the faux pears at a yard sale last week.  There was a whole bag for 50 cents!  Does anyone else buy faux fruit and vegetables?  I have a big fruit basket full of them and just can’t pass them up at sales!

Without even looking, I came across a fantastic site for entertaining. I’m sure ya’ll have heard of it and I’m just the last to know but just in case others have missed it, I wanted to share this site with you.  Hostess with the Mostess has tons of the most amazing party ideas!

I must also send out a thank you to Gwen Moss for mentioning this site in one of her posts.  I got such great inspiration from her Thrifty Halloween post!  In the above picture, she used doll heads to decorate! She had a lot of great ideas for Halloween since she hosts an adult party every year!  I think I pinned almost every picture!

Modern Tarnish

Goodness, it’s been two weeks since I posted a tablescape, well a regular one at least!  Last week, I quickly threw one together since we were preparing for Hurricane Isaac and the week before I shared my coffee station.

Since it’s a 105 degrees outside and we’re still overcome with love bugs, I had to set the table inside.  I think this tablescape would have looked better in the dining room but my tablecloth wouldn’t fit the table.

This is the first time I’ve used the Danish Modern flatware I purchased from the auction.  As soon as I saw this tablecloth I thought of this flatware.  I purchased it at a local store called Dirt Cheap.  All the items are new but sold at a discount but you have to dig which I don’t like.  Once I realized they sold a lot of napkins and tablecloths I started checking in often and purchased a lot of nice ones ranging from $1 to $5.  Most of them are from Target.

Once I started arranging things, the table started going in a different direction.  The black plates reflect the trim around the wood chargers.  The pretty blue napkins that I would months ago at a thrift store for $2 matched the table perfectly.

Once I set the silver-plated salt and pepper shakers, I realized that the silver looked really good on this table! 

In came the champagne bucket, tarnish and all!  To bring in a little more brown, I used a set of iron birds that Hunter gave me last week.

Iced tea glasses by Gorham completes the table.

TIP OF THE DAY: Love bugs are hard to clean off the windshield, to make the job easier, use a dryer sheet.

Hurricane Issac

We are getting ready for Hurricane Issac.  It is headed our way and is expected to pass just to the left of us which means we will get a lot of the bad winds (the east side is worse).  Hopefully, before it reaches us it will be downgraded back to a tropical storm.  We live about 230 miles northwest of New Orleans so it will travel across land before reaching us which helps to break up the storm a bit.  So, I decided to throw a quick tablescape together in the living room on the coffee table.

If we lose power, which I’m sure we will, we basically live in the living room until it is restored.  We do have a generators which keep our freezer and refrigerator going.  We also put sheets up on each doorway and put a window unit in the living room so we can try to stay cool.

We even put air mattresses in here to sleep on. 

During Hurricane Katrina we were out of power for two weeks!  After a few days, we moved our travel trailer to my mom’s and stayed there until it was restored.  She lives a town over from us but her power comes back on quickly because she lives close to a prison so power is more of a priority.  At this time, we didn’t have a generator and lost all of our food in the freezer and refrigerator.  Other than that, we didn’t have any damage because it moved north to the east of us.

A few years later, Hurricane Gustaf came though.  We were more prepared this time!  We had already purchased generators so our frozen food was safe.  After the storm passed, we hooked the generator up to our travel trailer and stayed in it until the power came back on.  We did have damage during this storm which passed directly over us but thankfully it was only downed trees, 13 I think.

Thankfully, we have a gas stove so we are able to still cook.

I’m posting my tablescape a little early because I don’t know when we’ll lose internet service.  I don’t even know if I be able to link up to any parties.  So, please say a prayer not just for us but for the people on the coast, they’ll be hit with the worst of it.
