Vintage Barq’s Chalkboard

 

 

I made a decision earlier this year to decorate our home using things that held special meaning to us.  It didn’t matter if it was in style or not, even though it’s an added bonus if it is!  This vintage chalkboard sign that we purchased from the auction is just such a special piece! 

 

 

Did you know that the Barq’s Brothers Bottling Company was founded in 1890 in the French Quarter in New Orleans, right here in our great state of Louisiana?  I think it also looks perfect with the platter that I found at this years Trash to Treasure Sale.

 

 

The platter is decorated with some great seafood, which Louisiana is also known for!

 

 

I’m debating if I should spruce it up with a coat of chalkboard paint and possibly add a small frame around it.  What do you think?

Thrifty Art Finds

 

I love finding vintage art, especially at a good price!  There are a few of my recent finds.

 

 

Aren’t the colors pretty?  This is signed “Mary Elizabeth Lush 1937.”

 

 

I have a thing for Audubon prints and this one will be a perfect Fall accessory.

 

 

This really large duck painting was purchased from the auction a couple of weeks ago.  I love the blue colors but have not idea what I’m going to do with it.  There is a oily wet stain on the top of the mat that I don’t know what to do with.  It will probably end up in the booth.

 

 

This was just a small unframed painting from GW.  The bright colors caught my eye!

 

 

This country scene painted on a saw was another recent auction purchase.  It will be going to the booth this week.

Booth Display Ideas

 

As some of you may know, Hunter and I started our own little booth at the local antique mall.  4 Sisters & Etc. is a new antique store that is rapidly growing and we are so excited to be a part of it!  I am constantly on the look out for ideas on how to display our items and thought I would share some great ideas that our fellow dealers have. 

 

This fisherman’s theme is so creative!  Everything from the boat to the….

 

 

reed fencing on the partition!

 

 

This bathtub is amazing for selling soaps!

 

 

The bed frame hanging from the ceiling provides display options for light fixtures, cooking racks, etc.

 

 

Lattice has always been widely used in booths.  I like how this dealer used dyed cheesecloth to drape the top and sides to define her area.

 

 

Tree branches are used here to display bird cages and bird houses.  I purchased a painted metal parrot from this booth to go in the tiki hut!  There’s even some Spanish moss!

Trash or Treasure?

 

Last week Hunter helped his great uncle clean out a storage room on the old dairy barn.  This is a big thrill for him!  I snapped a few pics of his first load including the old Bakelite radio you see above.  Hunter and I both have a love of old radios and fans.

 

 

Like these two here!  The large fan, made by Hunter, works great but the smaller one was not working….yet.  He found quite a few old chicken feeders.  I don’t know what his plans are for those!

 

 

I love the old chicken cage!  They were selling at the local auction last month for about $100 each!  I started to bid and he told me there were several in the barn!  Saved me some money, even though I don’t know what I’m going to do with it!

 

 

He opened this butter cookie tin and found two old wood planes!  He plans to keep these for himself!

 

 

As I said this is his first load!  I didn’t get any pics of the other loads but he ended up with several old farmhouse tables and quite a few stools!  He also got me an iron base from an old wood stove!  I just know that there has to be something fabulous that I can do with that! Do you have any ideas?

Affordable Linens at Dirt Cheap!

Are you always on the look out for linens at a good price?  I am and I’ve found a very good place to find them!  I rarely pay regular price for any of my table linens. In the past, I purchased at Marshall’s, JCP, Pottery Sale in the the clearance section and, of course, yard sales and Goodwill!  I have found a few at Goodwill, but if it doesn’t look new, I usually don’t bother with them.  Because at our Goodwill, a tablecloth is $5 and right down the road is a Dirt Cheap store! 

 

Our Dirt Cheap is very messy and this turned me away for a long time!  I don’t like to dig but after I started discovering the great deals on the linens, I became hooked!  The most expensive price you will pay for a tablecloth is $5 and they gradually get marked down to $1, usually within a couple of weeks.  The majority of the table linens that I have purchased were originally from Target.  They are new but are sometimes out of their original packs.  My mom has purchased quite a bit of the Shabby Chic line there for her bedroom.  A couple of weeks ago, Savyy wanted a lighter weight quilt for her bed and we found a white Shabby Chic for $10 for a queen size!

 

Here’s a just a few examples!  I still have linens that I haven’t used yet! 

 

This first table has two matching table runners that were purchased for $2 each.

The bright yellow patterned napkins in the Blue Willow table were either 50 cents for a dollar each.

Both the tablecloth and napkins are from Dirt Cheap on the Modern Tarnish table!  I have the tablecloth that matches the napkins as well!

I actually have several sizes of this tablecloth from the Hospitality Table.  After I purchased the first round one, probably for $5, they reduced them down to $1 so I purchased some larger ones.  You may remember the yellow napkins for the Blue Willow table.

Both the napkins and tablecloth, on this Tee Time table were “Dirt Cheap!”  I also have the tablecloth that matches the napkins.

Noritake First Blush–A Thrifty Find

 

I know, I know!  I said I wasn’t going to buy anymore dishes BUT I just couldn’t pass them up!  Last weekend, while thrifty shopping, I stopped in at a few yard sales.  I found a large set of Noritake china for $35.  I fell in love with the sweet floral pattern.  After a little price negotiations, I came home with the set for $25!

 

 

The pattern is called Noritake First Blush.  It was made from 1976 to 1982. Replacements.com has it listed at $14.99 for one plate!  So I think I got a really great deal!

 

 

It has a few serving pieces, such as this platter.

 

 

On the another find….  I have been wanted an Oreck vacuum cleaner but didn’t want to pay the high price.  I’ve used one before and have found that they work really well on hardwood floors.  Most upright vacuums just blow the dust around but the Oreck just sucks it up!

 

 

Well, I just one!  Instead of paying $300 or more, I pay $1!!!  The lady said that it has been stored in the garage for years and that it worked when they stored it.  She didn’t like it because she had all carpet and it doesn’t have a real wide suction area.

 

 

After getting it home, I wiped it up and plugged it end.  It had a new bag already in it and it started working immediately.  It worked like a charm!  I still can’t believe she only wanted a dollar for it!

Pelican Painting

 

In keeping with my Louisiana coastal feel, I found this pelican painting at Goodwill for $3!  I’m killing two birds with one stone here!  LOL!  Since the pelican is the Louisiana state bird and it’s a coastal creature, it is the perfect accessory!

 

 

The starfish came from Goodwill as well!  I was really surprised that it wasn’t all broke up.  The vintage style clock is Better Homes & Garden from Walmart.  I have been searching for some old clocks like this and have not come across a single one!

I do have plans for the mirror and hope that I can get it done this week but I have to work on the taxes!!  Yes, I wanted till almost the last minute this year!  What do you think about this lamp?  Does it look good here or should I try something different?

Trash to Treasure Finds

 

Hello, everyone!  Want to see what I got at last week’s Trash to Treasure sale?  Let’s take a look, shall we?  Last year I purchased smaller things so this year I wanted to purchased a few good pieces with some history!  Since I still had some money from my birthday last month and I have a 25th wedding anniversary in a few weeks, I wanted to get something that I would keep.  I think I found the perfect piece.  (If you missed last week’s post on the sale, click here.)

 

 

This is what I found!  The label stated that it was a plantation desk and since I live in “Plantation Country” and I love history, I decided this would be that one special piece!

 

 

I just LOVE it!  It looks really good in my office on that huge baluster table.

 

 

I think I’ll use it to store some of my genealogy papers.  Hey, my husband had some plantation owners in his family maybe this came from on of theirs!  LOL!  We’ll never know!

 

 

Another piece is this HEAVY old tool box!

 

 

I’m loving the old wood!  A few other things I got were…

 

 

This cute cheese and cracker server.  After I washed it up, the “Cheese” came off but that’s alright!  Some votive cups and a vintage tablecloth were some other finds.

 

 

A bright and beautiful crawfish platter!  A nice lady in front of me in the check out line told me where I could find matching accessories if I wanted them!

 

 

A few clear acrylic clam bowls and some crawfish spreaders to go along with the seafood theme.  I got a few more odds and ends and even went back on the 1/2 half day.  As soon as I got in the door after they opened, I headed to the art section to grab an Audubon framed print but someone beat me to it, just like the chair I told you about in my first post.  I love my finds and am already looking forward to next year!

Trash to Treasure Sale

 

 

Hello everyone!  Guess where I’m going to be bright and early Friday morning?  That’s right, it’s time for the annual Trash to Treasure sale! 

 

 

Every year, after Christmas, I start looking forward to this sale!  Usually, I have to travel about 40 miles to where it’s held but this year it’s about half that distant!

According to a recent newspaper article, they raised $173,000 at last year’s sale!  Proceeds are given to local charities!  I remember the first time I went.  Hunter was about 4 and Savvy was 2.  I took them by myself using a stroller.  Fourteen years later, it is going strong and gets bigger every year.  Now, there is no way I would go by myself with two small children!

 

 

These pictures are from Facebook and gives us a little glimpse of what will be offered.  I’ve got my eye on that Blue Willow!

 

 

How about all this vintage dishware?  Look at all the pretty colors!

 

 

It’s being held in an old Wal-Mart so it’s going to be a big spread!

This is what I want!  I LOVE this chair and it looks in pretty good shape!  I’ll probably have to be in line 2 hours ahead of time to get this!

 

Hunter likes the old scales.  Oh, did I mention that this a family outing for us?  LOL! The hubby takes off work to go every year.  Since, it’s closer to our home, he said he’s taking his own truck and I said that’s fine with me!  Now, there won’t be anyone trying to rush me!

 

There is something for everyone!  Toys, boys, tools, furniture, clothes, linens, collectibles, jewelry…….
