Most of us have developed a bad habit of judging other people without knowing all the facts. Jesus plainly warns us: "Judge not, that ye be not judged.” (Matthew 7:1 KJV).

When we judge others, we put ourselves in God's place, taking the authority reserved only for him. We forget that other people are fighting their own inner battles and sometimes that conflict shows itself in irritating actions. But if our own behavior is imperfect, why do we expect better from others?

We can remove this kind of thinking by practicing compassion and forgiveness. Only when we treat others the way Jesus treats us will we demonstrate the kind of love He wants us to have.

With His help, we can do this. We can make a little progress every day until we reach the point that we "do to others as you would have them to do to you." (Luke 6:31 NIV)

Loneliness:  Toothache of the Soul!

Loneliness is one of life's most miserable experiences. Everyone feels lonely at times, but is there a message for us in loneliness? Is there a way we can turn it into something positive?

Sometimes loneliness is a temporary condition that departs in a few hours or a couple days. But when you're burdened with this emotion for weeks, months, or even years, it's definitely telling you something.

In a sense, loneliness is like a toothache: It's a warning signal that something is wrong. And like a toothache, if left unattended, it usually gets worse. Your first response to loneliness may be to self-medicate - to try home remedies to make it go away.

Busyness is a common treatment.

You may think that if you fill your life with so many activities that you don't have time to think about your loneliness, you'll be cured. But busyness misses the message. It's like trying to heal a toothache by taking your mind off it. Busyness is only a distraction, not a cure.

Buying is another favorite therapy.

Maybe if you purchase something new, if you "reward" yourself, you'll feel better. And surprisingly, you do feel better - but only for a short while. Buying things to fix your loneliness is like an anesthetic. Sooner or later the numbing effect wears off. Then the pain comes back as strong as ever. Buying can also compound your problems with a mountain of credit card debt.

Bed is a third response to loneliness.

You may believe that intimacy is what you need, so you make an unwise choice with sex. Like the prodigal son, after you come to your senses, you're horrified to discover that this attempt at a cure not only makes loneliness worse, it also makes you feel desperate and cheap. This is the false cure of our modern culture, which promotes sex as a game, as recreation. This response to loneliness always ends in feelings of alienation and regret.

The real message, the real cure.

If all of these approaches don't work, what does? Is there a cure for loneliness? Is there some secret elixir that will fix this toothache of the soul?

We need to begin with a correct interpretation of this warning signal. Loneliness is God's way of telling you that you have a relationship problem. While that may seem obvious, there's more to it than just surrounding yourself with people. Doing that is the same as busyness, but using crowds instead of activities.

God's answer to loneliness is not the quantity of your relationships, but the quality.

Going back to the Old Testament, we discover that the first four of the Ten Commandments are about our relationship with God. The last six commandments are about our relationships with other people.

How is your relationship with God? Is it close and intimate, like that of a loving, caring father and his child? Or is your relationship with God cold and distant, only superficial?

As you reconnect with God and your prayers become more conversational and less formal, you'll actually feel God's presence. His reassurance is not just your imagination. We worship a God who lives among his people through the Holy Spirit. Loneliness is God's way, first, of drawing us closer to him, then forcing us to reach out to other people.

For many of us, improving our relationships with others and letting them get close to us is a distasteful cure, as dreaded as taking your toothache to a dentist. But satisfying, meaningful relationships take time and work. We're afraid to open up. We're afraid to let another person open up to us.

Past hurts have made us distrustful.

Friendship requires giving, but it also requires taking, and many of us would rather be independent. Yet the persistence of your loneliness should tell you that your past stubbornness hasn't worked either.

If you muster the courage to restore your relationship with God, then with others, you'll find your loneliness lifting. This is not a spiritual Band-Aid, but a real cure that works.

Your risks toward others will be rewarded. You'll find someone who understands and cares, and you'll find others whom you understand and care about as well. Like a visit to the dentist, this cure turns out to be not only final, but much less painful than you feared.

Overcoming Anxiety

Anxiety/Worry

While we can never be completely free from worry, the Bible shows us how to minimize worry and anxiety in our lives.  Philippians 4:6-7 says do not worry about anything, but with prayer and supplication with thanksgiving make your requests known to God and then the peace of God will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.

 

Pray About Life's Worries

Believers are commanded to pray about life's worries. These prayers are to be more than requests for favorable answers. They are to include thanksgiving and praise along with the needs. Praying in this way reminds us of the many blessings God continually gives us whether we ask or not. This reminds us of God's great love for us and that He knows and does what is best for us.

 

A Sense of Security in Jesus

Worry is proportional to our sense of security. When life is going as planned and we feel safe in our life routines, then worries subside. Likewise, worry increases when we feel threatened, insecure or are overly focused on and committed to some result. 1 Peter 5:7 says cast your cares upon Jesus because He cares for you. The practice of believers is to take our worries to Jesus in prayer and leave them with Him. This reinforces our dependence on, and faith in Jesus.

Recognize a Wrong Focus

Worries increase when we become focused on the things of this world. Jesus said the treasures of this world are subject to decay and can be taken away but heavenly treasures are secure (Matthew 6:19). Therefore, set your priorities on God and not on money (Matthew 6:24). Man worries about such things as having food and clothes but is given life by God. God provides life, without which the concerns of life are meaningless.

Worry can cause ulcers and mental problems that can have destructive health effects that shorten life. No amount of worry will add even one hour to one's life (Matthew 6:27). Therefore, why worry? The Bible teaches that we should deal with each day's problems when they occur and not be obsessed with future concerns that may not happen (Matthew 6:34).

Focus on Jesus

In Luke 10:38-42, Jesus visits the house of the sisters Martha and Mary. Martha was busy with many details regarding making Jesus and his disciples comfortable. Mary, on the other hand, was sitting at the feet of Jesus listening to what he said. Martha complained to Jesus that Mary should be busy helping but Jesus told Martha that "…you are worried and anxious about many things, but only one thing is needed. Mary has chosen what is better and it will not be taken away from her." (Luke 10:41-42)

What is this one thing that freed Mary from the business and worries experienced by her sister? Mary chose to focus on Jesus, listen to Him and ignore the immediate demands of hospitality. I do not believe that Mary was being irresponsible, rather she wanted to experience and learn from Jesus first and later, when He was done speaking, she would fulfill her duties. Mary had her priorities straight. Put God first and He will free us from worries and take care of the rest of our concerns.

Sharing Your Faith

One of the best ways to share your faith is to demonstrate the very things you believe by staying positive and having a good attitude even in the middle of a crisis in your own life. Remember the story in the Bible about Peter walking out onto the water when Jesus called to him? He kept walking above the water as long as he stayed focused on Jesus. But once he focused on the storm, he sank.

 

When the people around you see the peace in your life, especially when it seems like you're surrounded by storms, you can bet they'll want to know how to get what you got! On the other hand, if all they see is the top of your head as you sink into the water, there's not a whole lot to ask.

 

People can spot a phony from a mile away. The absolute worst thing you can do is say one thing and do another. If you aren't committed to applying Christian principles in your own life, you will not only be ineffective, but will be seen as insincere and phony. People aren't as interested in what you say, as they are in seeing how it's working in your life.

God’s Gift

 

When I first heard the gospel news,
It was revealed to me,
Why Jesus Christ came to this earth,
To die to set us free.

I'd like to share this news with you,
Why the Lord Jesus came,
So you can have this free gift too,
When you call upon his name.

I was told how in the beginning,
That the enemy of God,
Tricked Adam and Eve into eating,
Of the fruit that God forbid.

They disobeyed the sovereign Lord,
But not without a cost,
Through them sin came into the world,
Separating mankind from God.

But God so loved the world,
He gave Jesus, his only Son,
For no one can come to the Father,
Unless they come through him.

Led like a lamb to the slaughter,
To the cross at Calvary,
Blameless and pure, he paid our price,
When he died for you and me.

On that cruel cross he died in pain,
They laid him in a tomb,
But three days later, just like he said,
He rose to life again!

Oh, death where is your sting?
He showed the world that day,
In Christ we serve a risen Lord,
Who's alive in every way.

So be careful of false teachers,
So that you're not misled,
Their faith is not in Jesus Christ,
But in men who are long dead.

You may live a life of kindness,
Without Jesus, but this I've learned,
Good deeds lead not to salvation,
It's God's gift that cannot be earned.

Some say they have not sinned at all,
But if they read God's Word,
It says for all have sinned and fall
Short of the glory of God.

So take the gospel to your heart,
With God you always win,
Ask Jesus Christ to rule your life,
Confess all things to him.

When you realize the sacrifice
God made because he cares,
Get on your knees and tell the Lord,
These words in humble prayer.

Lord, Jesus I am a sinner,
I'm so sorry for my ways,
Thank you for dying for my sin,
Come into my life today.

If you should do this precious thing,
All angels will rejoice,
In heaven you have eternal life,
Because Jesus was your choice.

May his bright light shine out through you,
May it shine far and wide,
Showing others how their lives could be,
With Jesus by their side.

Please share your faith with others,
As someone did with me,
So they will know how to decide,
Where they'll spend eternity.

When you have times of trouble,
That are just too hard to bear
Remember who to go to,
Pray to our Lord who cares.

And with his gentle, humble heart,
Your soul will find its rest,
Take on his yoke and learn from him,
And your life will be truly blessed.

We should be ever watchful,
And holy in his sight,
For suddenly he will return,
As a thief comes in the night.

All will know the truth that day,
It says so in God's Word,
Every knee shall bow, every tongue confess,
That Jesus Christ is Lord!

To the glory of God the Father,

How fit is your faith? Do you need a spiritual check-up?

 

 

Your faith is based on a relationship with God, not religious obligations and rituals. You follow Christ because you want to, not because you have to. Your relationship with Jesus flows naturally out of love. It is not forced or driven by guilt. (1 John 4:7-18; Hebrews 10:19-22.)

 

If you sense something might be wrong in your spiritual life, perhaps it's time to examine your Christian walk. Here are 12 signs of a healthy faith-life.

 

Your sense of security and significance is centered on God and who you are in Christ, not on others or your accomplishments. (1 Thessalonians 2:1-6; Ephesians 6:6-7.) 

1. Your faith in God is strengthened as you walk through life's troubles, trials and painful experiences, not weakened or destroyed. (1 Peter 4:12-13; James 1:2-4.)
2. Your service to others flows out of genuine love and concern for them, not from compulsion or a need to be recognized. You offer your service as a joy and a pleasure and not an obligation or a heavy burden. (Ephesians 6:6-7; Ephesians 2:8-10; Romans 12:10.)
3. You value and respect the unique differences and individual gifts of your brothers and sisters in Christ, rather than expecting conformity to one Christian standard. You appreciate and celebrate others' gifts. (Romans 14; Romans 12:6; 1 Corinthians 12:4-31.)
4. You are able to give and receive trust and allow others to see you—and themselves—in a state of vulnerability and imperfection. You allow yourself and others the freedom to make mistakes. (1 Peter 3:8; Ephesians 4:2; Romans 14.)
5. You can relate to real, everyday people with a non-judgmental, non-legalistic attitude. (Romans 14; Matthew 7:1; Luke 6:37.)
6. You thrive in an atmosphere of learning, where free thinking is encouraged. Questions and doubts are normal. (1 Peter 2:1-3; Acts 17:11; 2 Timothy 2:15; Luke 2:41-47.)
7. You prefer balance over black and white extremes in your approach to the Bible, its teachings and the Christian life. (Ecclesiastes 7:18; Romans 14.)
8. You do not feel threatened or defensive when others hold to a different opinion or perspective. You can agree to disagree, even with other Christians. (Titus 3:9; 1 Corinthians 12:12-25; 1 Corinthians 1:10-17.)
9. You are not afraid of emotional expressions from yourself and others. Emotions are not bad, they just are. (Joel 2:12-13; Psalm 47:1; Psalm 98:4; 2 Corinthians 9:12-15.)
10. You have the ability to relax and have fun. You can laugh at yourself and at life. (Ecclesiastes 3:1-4; 8:15; Proverbs 17:22; Nehemiah 8:10)

9 Then shalt thou understand righteousness, and judgment, and equity; yea, every good path.

10 When wisdom entereth into thine heart, and knowledge is pleasant unto thy soul;

11Discretion shall preserve thee, understanding shall keep thee:
 

Wisdom with knowledge gives a person tremendous advantage. This understanding and discretion is not of the world, but of the Lord and His Word. A really good working knowledge of God's Word can keep you from making mistakes. The answers to all of life's problems can be found in the Word of God. The heart controls the conscious and subconscious actions of man. If the heart of man is stayed on the Lord, there is no way that man can be defeated.  Truth is the protector from all evil!
 

12 To deliver thee from the way of the evil man, from the man that speaketh froward things;

13 Who leave the paths of uprightness, to walk in the ways of darkness;
 

Christians walk in the light and have no fellowship with darkness. I John 1:5-7 says "This then is the message which we have heard of him, and declare unto you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all." "If we say that we have fellowship with him, and walk in darkness, we lie, and do not the truth:" "But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin."

14 Who rejoice to do evil, and delight in the frowardness of the wicked;

15 Whose ways are crooked, and they froward in their paths:

16 To deliver thee from the strange woman, even from the stranger which flattereth with her words;

17 Which forsaketh the guide of her youth, and forgetteth the covenant of her God.

18 For her house inclineth unto death, and her paths unto the dead.

19 None that go unto her return again , neither take they hold of the paths of life.
 

There are only two paths to take. The path of sin leads to death and destruction. The path of righteousness leads to life everlasting.
 

20 That thou mayest walk in the way of good men, and keep the paths of the righteous.

21 For the upright shall dwell in the land, and the perfect shall remain in it.

22 But the wicked shall be cut off from the earth, and the transgressors shall be rooted out of it.
 

In Psalms 37:29 we read, "The righteous shall inherit the land, and dwell therein for ever." We have seen over and over how the wicked will be driven off the land. Canaan became the land of Israel because the wicked were driven out. We, as Christians, shall reign 1000 years with Jesus.  According to Revelation 20:6 "Blessed and holy [is] he that hath part in the first resurrection: on such the second death hath no power, but they shall be priests of God and of Christ, and shall reign with him a thousand years."

So, if we are truly wise, we shall be careful to avoid all evil company and evil practices.  When wisdom has dominion over us, then it not only fills the head, but enters into the heart, and will preserve us, against corruptions within and temptations without. The ways of sin are ways of darkness, uncomfortable and unsafe: what fools are those who leave the plain, pleasant, lightsome paths of uprightness, to walk in such ways!

I recently read that whatever we fill our minds with is what we become.  This is so true!  Let’s fill our mind with things that are right with the Lord and turn from the things of darkness!

Sunday Bible Study – Proverbs 1:8-33

Welcome everyone to this week’s Bible Study.  We will be picking up where we left off last week on Proverbs 1:8.   If you don't have a Bible or don't have one handy and would like to follow along or perhaps read a different version, the Bible Study Tool in the sidebar will provide you with different versions and other study tools.

 

Verse 8 is the first of ten verses in which the father appeals to the son to listen to his counsel, or advice, and chose wisdom over folly.  It is the wise man’s warning against the enticement of sinners.

 

8 My son, hear the instruction of thy father, and forsake not the law of thy mother:

9 For they shall be an ornament of grace unto thy head, and chains about thy neck.

10 My son, if sinners entice thee, consent thou not.

11 If they say , Come with us, let us lay wait for blood, let us lurk privily for the innocent without cause:

12 Let us swallow them up alive as the grave; and whole, as those that go down into the pit:

13 We shall find all precious substance, we shall fill our houses with spoil:

14Cast in thy lot among us; let us all have one purse:

15 My son, walk not thou in the way with them; refrain thy foot from their path:

16 For their feet run to evil, and make haste to shed blood.

17 Surely in vain the net is spread in the sight of any bird .

18 And they lay wait for their own blood; they lurk privily for their own lives.

19 So are the ways of every one that is greedy of gain; which taketh away the life of the owners thereof.

 

The last verse sums if all up!  Like a boomerang, their acts of violence will come back upon them.  When greed becomes the owner of a man’s life, that man is destined for destruction.  WHAT MEN SOW, THEY DO REAP!  This is the lesson to be learned here!

 

20Wisdom crieth without; she uttereth her voice in the streets:

21 She crieth in the chief place of concourse , in the openings of the gates: in the city she uttereth her words, saying,

22 How long, ye simple ones, will ye love simplicity? and the scorners delight in their scorning, and fools hate knowledge?

23Turn you at my reproof: behold, I will pour out my spirit unto you, I will make known my words unto you.

24 Because I have called , and ye refused ; I have stretched out my hand, and no man regarded ;

25 But ye have set at nought all my counsel, and would none of my reproof:

26 I also will laugh at your calamity; I will mock when your fear cometh ;

27 When your fear cometh as desolation , and your destruction cometh as a whirlwind; when distress and anguish cometh upon you.

28 Then shall they call upon me, but I will not answer ; they shall seek me early , but they shall not find me:

29 For that they hated knowledge, and did not choose the fear of the LORD:

30 They would none of my counsel: they despised all my reproof.

31 Therefore shall they eat of the fruit of their own way, and be filled with their own devices.

32 For the turning away of the simple shall slay them, and the prosperity of fools shall destroy them.

33 But whoso hearkeneth unto me shall dwell safely, and shall be quiet from fear of evil.

The pleas of wisdom continues in verse 20-22 and we meet the person of wisdom.  Wisdom appears in this section as a female.  She cries to everyone to come to her and learn.  There are three groups here that are especially singled out, the simple ones, or untaught, the scorners, or scoffers, and the fools, or morally dull.
 

According to verses 26-28, the consequences of rejecting wisdom are immense.  God’s mercy vanishes in the presence of self-reliance and in its place comes a resolute look of anger!  They who do not choose the fear of the Lord as a worthy complement to their efforts shall eat of the fruit of their own way..in order words, WHAT MEN SOW, THEY DO REAP!
 

Are we despisers of wisdom?  Let us hearken diligently, and obey the Lord Jesus, that we may enjoy peace of conscience and confidence in God; be free from evil, in life, in death, and forever!  This is His promise to those that believe and accept!

Sunday Bible Study - Proverbs Chapter 1

 

Welcome everyone!  I’m so glad you stopped by for the first post in my new series “Sunday Bible Study.”  If you don’t have a Bible or don’t have one handy and would like to read along, look for the Bible Study Tools on the sidebar. 

 

I wanted to start the study with the book of Proverbs.  It is clearly written to show the reader how to live disciplined and successful lives, to know right from wrong and to treat others fairly and justly.  The basic meaning of the Hebrew word for “proverbs” is comparison and we see many verses used that way. 

 

¹The proverbs of Solomon the son of David, king of Israel;

 

The book of Proverbs was mostly written by Solomon in the middle of the tenth century BC. As we get deeper in the book, it is clear that there were other wise men that helped.

 

²To know wisdom and instruction; to perceive the words of understanding;

³To receive the instruction of wisdom, justice, and judgment, and equity;

⁴To give subtilty to the simple, to the young man knowledge and discretion.

⁵A wise man will hear, and will increase learning; and a man of understanding shall attain unto wise counsels:

⁶To understand a proverb, and the interpretation; the words of the wise, and their dark sayings.'

 

Wisdom is the key work of the book and basically means “skill in living.” Whereas instruction is not referring to classroom instruction but more like knowing the difference between right and wrong. In verse 4, “To give subtilty to the simple, to the young man knowledge and discretion” In other words, a wise man will have the ability to seize opportunities for good and use it as an to increase his own learning and the “simple” is someone who is easily led astray. The last verse is kind of sums it all up, even a wise and Godly man does not know everything!  He still continues to learn.  We must all remember this!  We can learn a lot from each other.  This Bible study is a perfect example.  I am writing from my point of view but can and will learn more from others who comment with their point of view!  An unwise man thinks he knows it all!

 

⁷The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge: but fools despise wisdom and instruction.

 

There are a lot of views on God in today’s world.  Some people say God is Love and would never allow anything bad to happen.  Others say that He is a vengeful God.  Verse 7 has helped me with these views because there is truth to both.  “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge….”  Fear…well I do fear God but I also love Him as well but how do you explain this?  Yes, a parent is loved and feared at the same time.  When a child has done wrong there is fear present as to what punishment the parent will give. To me, the fear of God is more.  The Bible tells us of how God has punished His people severely for their disobedience.  I don’t think a Christian earthly father would dish out this kind of punishment. 

 

So, how has this verse helped me?  Well, it’s probably more of the footnotes in my Bible that helped.  It made a comparison between the fear of God and the fear of electricity. 

 

 

Yes, we all have electricity.  We love electricity because it helps cool off our homes in the heat of the summer, allows us entertainment though radios, dvd players, and televisions, and so on.  It’s almost impossible to live without.  On the hand, electricity will ELECTROCUTE you!!!  You know not to leave electrical cords around water.  It causes FIRES!  You know not to use an appliance that has faulty wires!  So it is to be respected, used wisely, and FEARED.

 

Do you see how this comparison has helped me?  I love the Lord, respect Him and try to live my life according to His word but I also fear His response if I don’t!

 

Please understand that I am NOT saying that God allows horrible things to us specifically as punishment.  I feel that He does punish us in ways but not in some horrible way like the death of a child or spouse.

 

Once we accept that God is to be feared, to be reverenced, served, and worshipped, this will mark the beginning of knowledge!  We will see  and understand things differently.  Things that were once cloudy, are now clear! 

 

“…But fools despise wisdom and instruction.”  Yes, I was once one of these “fools”, one who did not believe in God.  I did not want to listen!  I was actually scared to listen.   Maybe I should rephrase this, I have always believed that there was a God but had not accepted him as my Savior!  So, at one point I was scared to hear the words of God!  But NO MORE! I serve an awesome GOD and I hope, no, I pray! that this post blesses you and helps to deepen your relationship with God!
