Ballard Copy Cat Lamp with Seagrass Shade

This is my first time joining in at the Copy Cat Challenge over at DebbieDoo’s.  I've never joined before because I can’t seem to make up my mind about what to do.  I mean, everywhere you turn there is amazing inspiration!  I had been planning on doing this project for my office and decided to go and ahead and finish so I could join in.

I love the sea grass shades that you see at Ballard Designs!  After Hunter came home with this vintage lamp that looked at LOT like the tasseau lamp that Ballard has, I decided to make my own seagrass shade.

This is the Ballard lamp.  The one pictured here is in a rubbed black finish.  Forgive the rumpled look of the catalog, I have looked though it quite a few times.

And this is a close up of the Ballard shade. 

I saw another DIY seagrass shade made by thecountrychiccottage.net.  She used a seat cover that was made of the same material as my placemat.

I purchased the shade from Wal-Mart for $10 and already had the placemat.

This is the lamp that Hunter had.  The bottom part of the base is a lot like the tasseau lamp but the top part has a faux candle slip cover thing. It is old and had the cloth covered electrical cord so I got Hunter to rewire it for me.

Here’s a closer look at the placemat.  I unraveled it by clipping the threads.  I then started hot gluing from the bottom of the shade.

I made sure the first row was straight and covered the bottom outside edge of the shade.  At the end of the run, I cut the material and glued end to end.  I started the next run directly on top of the previous one.

 

I made sure that my rows stayed as straight as possible.  After I completed all the rows, I glued a vertical piece over the seams, tucking in under at the bottom.

It took less than one placemat to do this shade and was very easy.

It’s home, for now, is in the entry way.  Once I get my office completed, it will be moved to my desk.  I considered painting the lamp base but I kind of like it how it is and my desk is white so the darker finish will look better in there.

Wicker Trays as Art

Remember my china closet?  Well, I knew after I completed my Civil War utensil art that the wall needed something else but I didn’t know what.

While rearranging some platters on the shelf, I thought why not hang some of the wicker pieces on the wall?

I use the platters quite a lot so to have them so handy was great!

They were all purchased at yard sales, ranging in price from 50 cents to twelve dollars.  Yes, twelve dollars is a little high for me too but the round platter to the right is from Pampered Chef and is quite heavy and sturdy!

I love the texture it adds to the wall and the different shapes!

and since the platters are hanging and not on the shelf, I have more room for storage!

Displaying Pictures in the Home

 

Today I’m joining Kelly’s Korner Blog for Show Us Your Life.  Today’s party is focusing on how we display are pictures.  I do have one wall of pictures in my upstairs hallway but I couldn’t show it to you because I accidentally knocked one down the other day and broke the glass!  The rest of my pictures are scattered here and there.  The first picture is from the master bedroom which has a few family photos on the dresser.

I’ve recently put a few out in the office which I’ve been working on.

I’m been busy painting furniture and trying to organize supplies and papers!

One in the living room….

and here are several in the entertainment center.  This is a shallow deep shelf above the television.  I purchased some photo boxes from Hobby Lobby and lined them up in the back to store extra photos and Christmas DVD’s.  That left me a little space towards the front for some picture frames.

Flamingo Tablescape

For some reason, it seems like everywhere I turn, a flamingo catches my eye!  Last summer, I bought my first flamingo.  Well, it was a set of flamingo glasses from the Salvation Army.

They came in this little basket with a set of six glasses.  Now, I’m down to five!  Hunter accidentally broke one just a couple of days after I got them.

I’ve been wanting to do a tablescape with some flamingo touches and since I picked up a metal flamingo at Old Time Pottery, I decided to do one for this week.

It’s going to look so cute in one of my flower beds!

I started by using a vintage tablecloth that my mom gave me.  The leaves on the tablecloth reminds me of big tropical leaves. I used my flamingo glasses and candlewick glasses.

The table setting consists of rattan chargers (Walmart) topped with robin’s egg blue dinner plate ($ Tree).  I then layered a white salad plate (Pier One) with a clear clam plate.

Hot pink napkins added a little pop!  The pink flatware is a recent purchase from Goodwill.

Salt and pepper shakers are a Florida souvenir.

I found the little flamingoes at the Dollar Store.

TIP OF THE WEEK:  When hosting a party or get together where you serve scoops of ice cream, get a head start by softening the ice cream, scoop individual portions onto a tray covered with wax paper.  Put the tray in the freezer.  Once the scoops firm up, put them into a larger bowl with a lid.  When ready to serve, it will be super easy and quick to get the ice cream ready!

Christmas in July–House Tour

I’m joining in all the fun with the Christmas in July going on at right now at these fabulous blogs..

 I wanted to share some of my pictures from Christmas 2011.

Here’s the living room mantel.  All of the garland I use is the basic garland that you get at Wal-Mart or Hobby Lobby.  I add real magnolia leaves and little cedar branches along the artificial picks.

The Christmas tree has lots of red with touches of gold.  The large bow and ribbon are the mesh ribbons.

The top of the entertainment center features a head bust of Santa Claus!

My mercury glass Santa's are displayed on the piano.  Last year I decided to coordinate the wrapping paper.

I picked up the three candlesticks at a yard sale last summer.  After adding a little greenery, it was a perfect fit for the top of the music cabinet.

On to the kitchen….my favorite thing is the garland running along the top of the cabinets.  Once again, I used basic garland with magnolia leaves and small pieces of cypress.  In addition, I inserted red poinsettias and red mesh ribbon.  At night when the lights on the garland are lit, it is so beautiful!  The light tends to reflect off the mesh ribbon.  I pull out my Christmas glasses and dishes to decorate the corner cabinet.

Even the top of the refrigerator gets a little whimsical decorations!

I accented the small china cabinet with touches of red Christmas décor…

as well as the china cabinet in the dining room!

And I couldn’t forget the mudroom!

The back door is decorated in candy canes and peppermints!

Home is Where the Heart Is

 

Typeset letters and a sunburst style mirror is what I used for my latest living room update! 

This past weekend we went to Fort Morgan, Alabama!  Unfortunately, it rained most of the time but I found a way to entertain myself.  Old Time Pottery!!!  I’ve only been able to go there a few times since we don’t leave anywhere near one.  I picked up some letters to do a project that I’ve had on my mind for awhile.  My daughter had this mirror in her room and decided it didn’t fit her décor anymore so out it went!  I knew immediately what I wanted to do with it but didn’t know where I wanted to put it.

I saw a picture in a Ballard Designs catalog where they used their typeset letters and a sunburst style mirror as the “O.”  I recently took down the picture I had hanging over the piano and replaced it with a mirror.  There was already a nail on the wall so I just hung the mirror there to see if I like it.  It was lower than I would have put it but I really liked it.  It just seemed to be a little bare over it and I thought of the “HOME” art work!

I picked up the letters at Old Time Pottery for $2 each!  Now, my dilemma is, do I paint the letters? or do I paint the mirror?  or do I leave it the way it is?  What do you think?  Help me out here now.

I like hanging mirrors opposite windows to help reflect light back into the room.  This one is opposite the french doors going out onto the screen porch.  It helps to brighten up this area a little.

This painting is a recent yard sale find for $10.  I love the blue!
