DIY Jar Lamp with Burlap Shade

SAM_6161

I have been wanting a clear lamp from Pottery Barn for a long time, one like this one.

Except I didn’t want to spend the bucks for it!  We finally took the plunge and tried to make one ourselves.

I found this large drum shade from Dirt Cheap for $4.  There was a few little dents in it but that didn’t bother me since I knew I was going to cover it.

I have to admit, I’m not a perfectionist!  I go the easiest route possible as long as the end result looks good!  I spread some burlap on the island and used spray adhesive to attached the burlap to the shade, taking a section at a time, making sure that it lay smooth.  I did put a piece of wax paper under the burlap so that the adhesive wouldn’t get on the granite.

After covering the outside, I trimmed off the excess burlap around the bottom and top, leaving enough to tuck under.  I used the hot glue gun to adhere it to the shade.  I cut a little slit in the fabric where each rod came down to achieve a smooth finish.

Now for the lamp.  I do like the mottled look of the Pottery Barn lamps but I couldn’t find a jar/jug that was the right size and/or price.  So I purchased the clear jar from Hobby Lobby.  It was $22.49 half off.  Since there was a large opening up top, we had to find something to close it up and to install the lamp parts to.  I had Hunter cut me a circular piece of wood and then routering the bottom some more so that it would fit in like a stopper.

I’m going to be honest now, this was my second attempt!  The first time, we tried to drill a hole in the glass for the cord but the jar cracked.  This time, I didn’t want to risk it again so we let the cord from straight from the switch as you can see here.

It fit perfectly!  and I really like the color of the natural wood and left it as is!

And here it is!   I.LOVE.IT!  It brightened up this area  and it puts out so much more light than the old lamp.  Now, I have another dilemma. Do I leave it empty or put something in it?

I put a few pine cones and pumpkins in it!

So, what do you think?  Empty or filler?
