We are getting ready for Hurricane Issac. It is headed our way and is expected to pass just to the left of us which means we will get a lot of the bad winds (the east side is worse). Hopefully, before it reaches us it will be downgraded back to a tropical storm. We live about 230 miles northwest of New Orleans so it will travel across land before reaching us which helps to break up the storm a bit. So, I decided to throw a quick tablescape together in the living room on the coffee table.
If we lose power, which I’m sure we will, we basically live in the living room until it is restored. We do have a generators which keep our freezer and refrigerator going. We also put sheets up on each doorway and put a window unit in the living room so we can try to stay cool.
We even put air mattresses in here to sleep on.
During Hurricane Katrina we were out of power for two weeks! After a few days, we moved our travel trailer to my mom’s and stayed there until it was restored. She lives a town over from us but her power comes back on quickly because she lives close to a prison so power is more of a priority. At this time, we didn’t have a generator and lost all of our food in the freezer and refrigerator. Other than that, we didn’t have any damage because it moved north to the east of us.
A few years later, Hurricane Gustaf came though. We were more prepared this time! We had already purchased generators so our frozen food was safe. After the storm passed, we hooked the generator up to our travel trailer and stayed in it until the power came back on. We did have damage during this storm which passed directly over us but thankfully it was only downed trees, 13 I think.
Thankfully, we have a gas stove so we are able to still cook.
I’m posting my tablescape a little early because I don’t know when we’ll lose internet service. I don’t even know if I be able to link up to any parties. So, please say a prayer not just for us but for the people on the coast, they’ll be hit with the worst of it.

Tammy, I was just reading about it on the news page before I clicked on your post. It seems it is getting stronger.I pray that your family and everyone in the path of this terrible storm will be safe and sheltered from any danger. It sounds and looks like you are prepared. We were also concerned there for a while. We are in Texas and didn't know if it was going to turn our way. I pray you don't loose any power! Be safe! By the way, your tablescape looks wonderful!
ReplyDeletePrayers for safety for all down along the Gulf coast. I was in Mississippi two years after Katrina on a mission trip w/ my church helping to get a family ready to move in to a new home after theirs was destroyed. Builder had run off and not finished but had taken all of their money. They lived in a camper for two and a half years.

You know we are all thinking of you and hoping for the best. Those hurricanes are really something else! With a tornado, it hits and it's gone. With hurricanes, though, the winds and rain can go on for days and days. It's frightening just to think of it! I'm glad you guys are prepared for the worst, but we're all praying for the best. Take care of yourselves, and please check in to let us know you're OK!

I don't know if you are as calm as you come across in this post, but you are totally my "hero" if you are! I come from a long line of women who panic in these kinds of situations....lol! I'm amazed that you were able to put together a tables cape & such a pretty one, at that!

ReplyDeleteI very much appreciate all the thought and prayers sent our way! We've made it though the worst of it, which was as bad as we expected in our immediate area. We only lost two trees. Another limb damaged our porch roof and another went though a windshield on one of Hunter's trucks. We're happy it was only minimal! Unfortunately we are still out of electricity and are using generators. Once again, many thanks!

ReplyDeleteI am surprised you were able to get a table together. I hope that things have calmed down by now for you. I am moving to VA and realize that a generator will be a necessity. You certainly have had a lot of experience with hurricanes -- two weeks without power! Joni
ReplyDeleteSounds like you have a good plan! We were w/o power a week last year with Irene, no water either as we are on a well. I feel sad for those who lost everything down there again.
